New course to help Keighley families who may be unhealthy or overweight

Written on April 21, 2009

Families across Keighley are being invited to sign up for a new course specifically developed for overweight children.

The MEND programme – which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it! – has been designed for families of children, aged between 7 and 13, who are overweight. It includes an initial assessment of children’s weight, their level of current physical activity and their diet and eating habits.

The free course is 18 sessions, and is run twice a week for two hour sessions. The next one will take place at Holy Family Catholic School in Keighley, from 9 May until 15 July, on Saturdays 10am – 12 noon and Wednesdays 5 – 7pm.

It combines advice and practical activities on healthy eating, opportunities to take part in physical activities, self-esteem and support for both parents and children from specifically trained health staff.
Activities will include:-
• Discussions about easy effective ways to improve your child’s behaviour
• Demonstrations and tips about healthy foods, label reading and portion sizes
• Weekly games and activities including swimming for children

Places on the programme are limited and to register you need to contact the obesity prevention team on 01274 202802 or the MEND team on 0870 609 1405. For more details about the Keighley and Bradford MEND programmes log on to www.mendprogramme.org
