Young Farmers Summer of Sport

Written on July 25, 2009

Silsden Young Farmers Club came out on top in a junior rounders tournament held last weekend, the latest in a string of recent rural sporting events backed by Bradford Council’s B Active ‘Sports Cheque’ fund.

The rounders tournament included teams from 16 Young Farmers Clubs around the district and follows an indoor Olympics, a tug of war match and a swimming competition all of which are part of a programme aimed at boosting sporting participation in the district’s rural young. The scheme has been backed by Bradford council’s B active ‘Sports Cheque’ fund via ‘Sport Keighley’ the local sports alliance with £500 worth of facility hire and equipment purchase. This has encouraged members to take part in a number of sports which they would not normally have access to.

Laura Moore of the Worth Valley Club which finished fourth of sixteen teams in the rounders tournament is the Craven district of YFC Sports secretary and is delighted with the uptake in the scheme which saw over 150 ten to seventeen year olds competing at rounders last weekend. “Many people think that Young Farmers must be only concerned with farming activities but this is certainly not the case. The support from the sports cheque fund has helped us show that given the chance, young farmers enjoy sport as much if not more than any group of young people.”

The summer of sport now continues over the summer with more rounders, kwick cricket, football and an outdoor Olympics still to come. Anyone interested in joining their nearest Young Farmers Club should contact the County Office on 01423 865870.
